This was an interesting project as it was initially briefed to the Digital Team as a project to focus only on improving one component of the homepage – the Fox Feed. The Fox Feed was the right rail of sports news that according to editors and stakeholders our users were not interacting with.
The business wanted us to come up with new versions of ‘the feed’.
We started doing some desktop research which included pulling out some GA analytics and setting up some heatmaps tracking using crazyegg.
The findings from this research showed us that the problem was not the ‘fox feed’ alone but the entire bottom half of the homepage which was barely clicked and/or seen (scrolled) by our users.
As the Lead UX Architect I led all UX activities from the research to the concept design and implementation of the refreshed homepage.
Among some of the activities we did were:
- Desktop Research
- Stakeholder survey
- UX Plan
- Creative workshop
As a result the refreshed, focused, and much shorter homepage was designed and launched in early 2015. with clear and strategically positioned entry points to our sports. Users were scrolling down the entire page and the sport index pages showed an increase on visits from the homepage.
